We are excited that you're interested in making your passion for education a profession with Laurier's Bachelor of Education (BEd) program! As a graduate of Laurier's BEd program, you will be knowledgeable, highly skilled and confident as you begin your teaching career.
Here are some answers to the biggest questions you might have as you embark on this journey to a challenging yet rewarding career in education. Jump to the section you're most interested in:
The BEd is a postgraduate bachelor’s degree program that requires an undergraduate degree. Preference is given to applicants who have completed, or are completing, a four-year undergraduate degree with a minimum of 20 full credits. Applicants holding a three-year degree will be considered for admission. Admission is based on your academic achievement and on the information you’ll submit in the experience profile part of the application.
If you have completed a three-year degree, you may still apply if you meet the requirements. You will be assessed on a case-by-case basis if you have completed a college/applied degree.
You must have a minimum academic average of B- in your most recently completed 10 full credits (20 half credits) of undergraduate university courses.
Your admission average is calculated using undergraduate courses that are completed by September 1 of the year preceding your anticipated enrolment. If you are taking courses in the fall term (September to December), we consider those courses only to ensure that you meet the subject requirements for your teaching subject; we will not include them in your overall admission average or your teaching subject average. Any courses that you take during the winter term (January to April) prior to your fall start date will not be considered towards your teaching subject requirements.
You must successfully complete a French-language proficiency assessment administered at Laurier. The assessment is typically held in January.
In addition, you must provide evidence of French-language proficiency through one of the following options:
You need a minimum of one teachable subject to be eligible for the Junior/Intermediate program. You may apply to a maximum of two teachable subjects. You will only receive an offer to one teachable subject. If you apply to more than one teachable (Junior/Intermediate), you will only receive an admission decision on one of your teachable choices. You are asked to rank them in your order of preference.
Your marks will be balanced with the Experience Profile (EP) you submit with your application. Your EP is your chance to share your lived experiences, backgrounds and understandings, as well as communicate your commitment to the teaching profession and to inclusive, inquiry-based and innovative learning communities.
Your profile can be in point form. We are looking for you to be honest and clear. Each question has a 500 word limit.
The Experience Profile form is completed and submitted online in your applicant portal account.
You must submit your completed Experience Profile before the posted deadline.
Your Experience Profile is reviewed if you meet the minimum academic requirements for admission. Experience Profile scores are not disclosed to applicants. Letters of reference are not required.
In your applicant portal account, you will find a list of documents we require for your application. The list also allows you to confirm when we have received your documents. Laurier does not confirm the receipt of documents by phone or email.
Visit our Required Documents page for more detailed information.
You may still be admissible to the program based on:
Should you receive an offer to the program, we would then work with you to ensure the conferring of your degree before the start of classes next fall.
Should you receive admission to the program, you may be required to clear conditions of your offer by June 30, 2023. Please remind us that you will be taking courses in the spring term. You will need to provide:
In other words, courses taken in the current fall term do not count towards your GPA, and courses taken in the upcoming winter term do not count towards teachable requirements.
