Education (BEd)

Laurier's Bachelor of Education (BEd) program is highly progressive and future-oriented. Our courses blend knowledge, skills, and global competencies that focus on the diverse needs of children and youth. We designed our full-time, two-year BEd program to prepare you to teach students in primary and junior grades (Kindergarten to Grade 6) or junior and intermediate grades (Grades 4 to 10).

Apply Your Learning

Our teacher education program is based on the Professional Development School (PDS) model, which implies that you will be immersed in the community and culture of your placement school. You will have five block practicum placements in schools, in addition to a weekly practicum day. In total, you’ll benefit from approximately 150 days of practicum experience.

Our partner school boards include Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic, Grand Erie, Halton, Halton Catholic, Upper Grand, Waterloo Catholic, Waterloo Region, and Wellington Catholic. Our partnerships provide you with extensive, in-depth, and sustained experiential learning experiences.

During the Professional Learning Seminars, you will reflect on your learning, connect practice to theory, share the uniqueness of your school sites with your peers, and discuss the roles and responsibilities of being a teacher.

Admissions

Format: full time      Duration: two years     Start: September (fall term)     OUAC codes: U10 (primary/junior); U11 (primary/junior with French as a second language focus); U20 (junior/intermediate)
Admission Requirements

The BEd is a postgraduate bachelor’s degree program that requires an undergraduate degree.

  • Preference is given to applicants who have completed, or are completing, a four-year undergraduate degree with a minimum of 20 full credits. Applicants holding a three-year degree will be considered for admission.
  • Admission is based on your academic achievement and on the information you’ll submit in the experience profile part of the application.
  • You must have a minimum academic average of B- in your most recently completed 10 full credits (20 half credits) of undergraduate university courses.
  • If you have a college/applied degree, you will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
  • Applicants who have completed or are completing a graduate degree will receive additional admission consideration.
  • If you're applying to the French as a Second Language (FSL) focus in Primary/Junior program, or the French teachable in the Junior/Intermediate program, you'll also be required to complete a French proficiency assessment. The assessment is typically conducted in January.
You must meet additional program-specific admission requirements, as well as submit the required documents.
Application Confirmation Email

Once you apply, you’ll receive a confirmation email containing information about your applicant portal account. The portal is our primary point of contact with you. Use the portal to view your list of required documents to complete your application. 

If you apply to both the Primary/Junior and Junior/Intermediate programs, you will receive an admissions decision on each application. If you apply to more than one teachable (Junior/Intermediate), you will only receive an admission decision on one of your teachable choices. You will need to rank them in your order of preference. If you apply to the Primary/Junior FSL program and are not admitted, you will automatically be considered for the non-FSL Primary/Junior program.

Admissions Decisions

Feb. 1, 2023 will be the earliest date to receive an offer of admission. Log into your portal account to view the decision made on your Bachelor of Education application. Laurier does not mail offers of admission. You will be able to access your offer of admission letter in your portal account. If you receive an offer of admission, your offer letter will indicate:

  • Additional information regarding the deadline to accept your offer.
  • The deadline to submit final transcripts.

We recommend that you check your applicant portal account frequently to verify that we have received your documents or to view a list of outstanding documents.

Note: We cannot guarantee that we will consider incomplete or late applications.

Important Dates for Fall 2023 Admission

  • Applications with the following items through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC) are due no later than Dec. 1, 2022:
    • Completed online TEAS application.
    • TEAS application fee.
    • Transcript request for every Ontario university and college you attended.
  • The following documents are required by Dec. 8, 2022:
  • If you are a Junior/Intermediate applicant taking courses for your teachable subject requirements in the fall term, you must submit a second unofficial transcript by Jan. 10, 2023 showing your updated grade information.
  • All Junior/Intermediate applicants who applied for French as their teachable, or Primary/Junior applicants for the French as a Second Language (FSL) focus, are required to complete a French proficiency assessment. Refer to Language Requirements for additional information.
  • Applicants eligible for services through the Accessible Learning Centre are encouraged to contact that office during the application process. Accommodations requested for the practicum component of the program in a Laurier partner school often require extensive time to review, determine and implement. The final decision on such accommodations rests with the partner school board.

The learning outcomes of the Bachelor of Education program refer to the following areas of teaching and learning.

Learning Environment

Use effective strategies to develop positive relationships and create an inclusive learning environment that respects diverse learner identities and supports the development of self-regulated, adaptive and social justice-oriented learners.

Knowledge of Education

Construct and apply subject-specific knowledge and understanding of students, Ontario curriculum, legislation, teaching practices, technology integration, and classroom management strategies, to promote the learning achievement of all students.

Planning

Design short- and long-term instructional plans that are developmentally appropriate and relevant to diverse learner needs, perspectives and experiences, using appropriate technologies and resources.

Instructional Strategies

Implement a broad range of evidence-based instructional strategies and technologies that promote self-regulated student learning and develop creative and critical thinking, collaborative and problem-solving skills.

Assessment

Conduct ongoing assessment of student progress, make data-informed decisions for differentiated instruction, and develop skills to evaluate student achievement and communicate results to students and parents/guardians.

Tuition and Scholarships

There are many elements to consider when calculating costs to continue your education, including tuition, fees and living expenses. At Laurier, we offer financial support for students through a variety of different programs and options.

Entrance Scholarships

Laurier offers entrance scholarships valued at $500 each to top-ranking students in each division. No application is required.

Indigenous Scholarships

Indigenous scholarships are available to qualified applicants who self-identify as having an Indigenous background, heritage or ancestry upon confirming an offer of admission to the BEd program at Laurier. These scholarships are not competitive and do not require a separate application.

The Waterloo campus is home to more than 17,700 undergraduate and graduate students. You're steps away from classes, residence, and campus amenities on this close-knit campus.

On the other hand, the Brantford campus is woven into the downtown core of the City of Brantford and is home to more than 3,000 students. With classrooms and study spaces close to great restaurants, shopping and hiking trails, you get the best of both worlds.
