Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

On April 26, 2022, the Minister of Colleges and Universities announced the expansion of the Laurier Bachelor of Education (BEd) program with the provision of new funded spaces for September 2022 and additional funded spaces for September 2023. This is a very exciting and welcomed announcement, allowing the highly respected Laurier Bachelor of Education program to be offered on both Laurier’s Waterloo and Brantford campuses beginning in September 2022.
We know that there are many questions related to the BEd in Brantford’s inaugural class for September 2022. Please refer to these Frequently Asked Questions below for details. For further information on the program, please check the Faculty of Education’s BEd program page or email deanofeducation@wlu.ca.
The Bachelor of Education program offered on the Brantford campus is identical to the Bachelor of Education program offered on the Waterloo campus. It is a two-year consecutive BEd program of full-time studies including coursework and practicum placements.
The Bachelor of Education program at the Brantford campus will begin in September 2022. The schedule of courses and practicum at the Brantford campus program is identical to the program of the Waterloo campus.
Laurier’s Brantford campus was established in 1999 and has state-of the art buildings, recreational and library facilities including a new athletic centre. The Brantford campus is located in downtown Brantford, and is committed to providing a positive and memorable campus experience for all students. The location of the campus provides ample parking and easy access to GO Transit Bus and VIA Rail transportation from London and Toronto. The specific locations of the Bachelor of Education classes are yet to finalized as there are several excellent choices for an effective teaching and learning environment in the buildings of Laurier’s Brantford campus.
The goal is to have two balanced cohorts of Bachelor of Education students (two cohorts of about 35 students each) at the Brantford campus. The BEd program at the Brantford campus will be offered as a choice to all applicants who recently accepted an offer to the Bachelor of Education program for the Waterloo campus. Due to the timing of this offer, a scholarship of $1,000 will be provided to each student who attends the Laurier Bachelor of Education program in Brantford. A letter from the Dean of Education was emailed to all September 2022 entrants, offering the Brantford campus option and scholarship. The deadline for indicating Brantford as a choice for students who have already accepted an offer to Waterloo is May 24, 2022 at noon ET. The deadline for students who are on the waitlist and would like to express interest in the Brantford campus is May 19, 2022 at 4:00 p.m. ET. The final selection of students for the Brantford campus will be determined based on first come, first served and a balance of cohorts. Students who are granted the Brantford campus BEd program and scholarship will be notified as soon as possible and no later than May 31, 2022.
A special $1,000 Scholarship will be provided and applied to the student account to offset tuition for Fall 2022 for those students joining the inaugural BEd class at Laurier's Brantford campus. Please note that a T4A tax slip is issued when a student receives a Laurier-specific scholarship, bursary or fellowship.
The schedule will be similar to the schedule of the Waterloo campus with Mondays as a Practicum Day in schools, one day as an ‘off’ Discretionary/Wellness Day and two to three days of classes each week. The five Practicum Blocks are the same for both Waterloo and Brantford campus programs.
All the same school board practicum placements will be available to students at the Waterloo and Brantford campuses. We currently have agreements with eight school boards and we are also working on procuring placements with the two Hamilton area school boards.
It is assumed that registration will take place as scheduled on June 15 for both the Waterloo and Brantford campus programs.
The Brantford BEd program will include exemplary professors representing a blend of experienced professors from the Waterloo campus and some professors / instructors hired specifically for the Brantford campus. The blend of teaching faculty will yield an exciting complement of professors with significant teaching, research and service achievements.
There will be experienced staff serving the BEd program such as a practicum officer, academic advisor and administrative assistant in addition to all the support staff available through various other departments of Wilfrid Laurier University.
The Waterloo and Brantford BEd programs will connect virtually for some activities and there will be some joint in-person optional activities. Brantford campus students will not be required to travel to Waterloo for any in-person sessions. There will be opportunities for joint professional development, international experiences, recreational activities and other strategies to create community between campuses/programs.
There are opportunities to request a room in modern residence facilities on campus, along with ample rental properties in Brantford. Close to the university is a transit hub and nearby various stores, restaurants, parklands/trails and much more to see and do. In Brantford, Laurier’s OneCard program partners with several local restaurants and food shops, allowing students convenience when patronizing local eateries.
