Block Transfer Agreement: General Arts and Science College Diplomas

Graduates from a two-year general Arts and Science diploma program can apply to Cultural Studies (in combination with another major) within the Faculty of Arts on Laurier’s Waterloo campus. To be considered for admission to the Faculty of Arts, graduates must have an overall average of 75% in their program, as well as have achieved a minimum of 60% in a 4U English course or equivalent.

Transfer students admitted into our Cultural Studies (in combination) program based on these requirements will be granted 6.0 credits towards their Laurier degree. Students taking a typical full-time course load (5.0 credits per academic year) will take approximately three years to complete their four-year honours Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree.

To graduate with your BA in Cultural Studies (in combination), you will need to complete the following courses at Laurier:

Cultural Studies Core Required Courses

  • KS100: Studying Popular Culture
  • KS101: Exploring Cultural Studies
  • KS203: Popular Culture and Ideology
  • KS400: Honours Seminar in Cultural Studies
  • 1.0 additional KS credit at the 200-level
  • 0.5 KS credit at the 300-level


Cultural Studies Electives

  • 1.5 credits from approved interdisciplinary electives. Sample courses include:
    • AN328: Anthropology and Visual Culture
    • FS239: Japanese Film
    • MU377: Contemporary Music Since 1975
    • GG393: Geography of Recreation
  • 1.0 credit from approved period/history electives. Sample courses include:
    • AR201: Amorous Aphrodite to Zesty Zeus: An Archaeological Approach to Myth
    • EN234: Shakespeare’s Tragedies and Histories
    • LL200: Cultural Perspectives I
    • PP263: Modern Philosophy II
  • 1.0 credit from approved theory electives. Sample courses include:
    • CS203: Conceptual Issues in Communication
    • GS331: Contemporary Case Studies in Peace and Conflict
    • WS303: Feminist Theory
    • SY207: Social Theory I

Interdisciplinary Electives

  • 0.0 – 1.0 additional credits in any discipline at any level.*

*Note: You can take up to a maximum of 5.0 100-level credits in total, including required courses, electives and transfer credits (typically 3.0 of the transfer credits granted through this agreement are at the 100-level).

Combination Major Courses

6.0 – 8.0 required credits in order to earn your second major (including any relevant transfer credits earned towards that program major).

Pursuing a Management Option

As a transfer student, you can also apply to add a Management Option (offered by the Lazaridis School of Business and Economics) to your honours BA degree. You can apply to this option on your initial application to transfer into Laurier’s Faculty of Arts. Details of this option and its eligibility requirements (including minimum grades for course progression) should be discussed with an academic advisor.

The Management Option is 4.0 credits total:

  • BU127: Introduction to Financial Accounting
