Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

Ranking Candidates on Navigator

Employers who interview during the primary interview period rank their candidates, and students rank employers. If you interview co-op students during the primary interview period, you will use Navigator to submit your rankings online.

Please submit your rankings by 9 p.m. on the final day of the primary interview period.

Once you have conducted interviews, please do not contact your applicants until we have communicated the results of the match to you.

How the Ranking and Matching Process Works

You provide us with your rankings online, according to our advertised deadline (if you miss the deadline, we will inform students that rankings are not available for your position.)

Students rank the positions for which they have been interviewed, according to our advertised deadline.

Employer and student rankings are combined to produce a sum, or total score, for each combination.

Students are matched with employers sequentially, based on total scores and the principle of “low score wins.” Total scores of two are linked, followed by total scores of three, then four, and five, and so on, until all possible combinations have been exhausted. Ties begin to occur at total scores of three, and are broken randomly.

A match at 1-1 occurs when:

Example of employer rankings.
Employer #   Student #   Total Score
ABC Corp. ranks Jane Doe 1 + Jane Doe ranks ABC Corp. 1 = 2

The lowest possible total score is two. There are no ties at this level, as you have only one first-choice per position, and students may rank only one employer as their first choice.

By ranking a student #1, you are extending an offer of employment to him or her. The student accepts the offer by ranking your position #1, which results in an automatic match.

Once students and employers matched at total scores of two have been eliminated, Navigator links all combinations with total scores of three. Scores of three can result from either of the following combinations:

Example of employer rankings.
Employer #   Student #   Total Score
Oak Ltd. ranks Lana Yu 1 + Lana Yu ranks Oak Ltd. 2 = 3
Oak Ltd. ranks Eric Smith 2 + Eric Smith ranks Oak Ltd. 1 = 3

Ties will be broken randomly by the program.

You may still recruit despite the pandemic!

Talented students are still seeking work for the spring work term. Please let us help you recruit students from business, economics, arts, science, and double degree programs in business with computing or financial math.

We recommend that you hire students to work remotely, if possible.

If you require students to work on site, please let us know about your physical distancing protocols.

At this time, we will schedule interviews by phone or video conference, such as Skype.

Send Us a Job Description

Please send a job description by email to your co-op co-ordinator or to lauriercoop@wlu.ca.

We usually post job descriptions for two days. When students apply to your job posting through Navigator you may view applications after 10 a.m. on the day after the application deadline.

View Applications and Arrange Interviews through our Navigator system

Once you have chosen your candidates, let us know the date, location, start time and length of the interviews. Our co-op office will arrange the interviews and send you a schedule.

Please give us three days' notice, if possible, to schedule interviews. Please let know:

  • names of candidates and interviewers
  • date and start time
  • length of interview
  • interval between interviews
  • length of lunch break

During this period when physical distancing is required, we will arrange interviews by phone or online, including by Skype.

Interview and Rank Your Candidates

Primary Interview Period

During the primary interview period, you will rank our students and they will rank you. By ranking students, you agree to hire the one with whom you are "matched."

Almost all interviews occur on campus during the primary interview period. If you interview during the primary interview period, do not communicate with the students between the interview and the match.

Continuous Employment Period (after the primary period)

After we share the results of the match with you and the students, we enter the continuous employment period. If you prefer to arrange interviews yourself, please let us know the details so we don't schedule students for other interviews at the same time. (As long as physical distancing is required, please interview by phone or online.)

After your interviews, let us know which students you agree to hire. The co-op office will extend employment offers to students directly on your behalf and let you know which students accept your offer.

We accept job postings and arrange interviews until all students have found employment.
