When you apply to Laurier, we will automatically evaluate the prior coursework listed on your application for transfer credit potential. You will receive a transfer credit assessment at the same time you receive an offer of admission.

After you confirm your offer of admission, you can submit a request to have specific transfer credits that have been granted as "elective" and/or "miscellaneous" credits reassessed for a specific course equivalency. You have up to one year following receipt of an offer of admission to request this reassessment.

Reassessment Process

A transfer credit equivalency is granted when the content and requirements of a course completed at another institution are evaluated by faculty and declared the same or comparable to a Laurier course. Students can submit necessary documents and request for their previous completed post-secondary education to be reassessed by faculty experts for potential equivalencies.

This is an optional process; you are not required to submit course syllabi. It is your choice which course syllabi to submit for additional review. We encourage you to review your program requirements to see if there is any overlap between your completed and required courses at Laurier. Graduate students should connect with their program coordinators if they have transfer credit related questions.

Check out ONTransfer.ca to learn more about how we assess transfer credit potential. This is an online database of course equivalencies at Ontario universities. You can search for both courses that Laurier has approved as equivalent to other institutions' courses, and courses that other institutions have approved as equivalent to Laurier's courses.

Eligibility

This process is for eligible post-secondary education completed before starting an undergraduate program at Laurier. Transfer credits awarded for exchange programs organized by Laurier, or for courses done by Letter of Permission (LOP), are not eligible for reassessment.

Other considerations before you begin this process include:

  • If you transfer via a pathway, you'll have been granted a block of transfer credits on your offer letter, please review our additional instructions regarding block transfer credit reassessments.
  • If you were admitted to Laurier on a 2+2 pathway or articulation agreement, please do not submit your course syllabi for reassessment. Your college program has already been reviewed by our faculty for Laurier transfer credits and you have been granted the maximum number of transfer credits possible based on the diploma you have completed.
  • High school curriculums eligible for transfer credits are not eligible for the transfer credit reassessment process. Requests for reassessment will not be processed, and you will not receive any follow-up communication.

What to Submit

To assess your previously completed education, our faculty experts will need to receive your official course syllabus, also known as course outline or instructional plan, for each course you wish to have reviewed. These documents are given out at the start of the course and we require one PDF document per course for assessment.

Please ensure each course syllabus includes the following information:

  • course description
  • evaluation breakdown
  • assignment details
  • weekly schedule
  • topics covered
  • textbooks used

The course syllabus you submit for review must match the terms you completed the course in. For example, if you completed a course in Fall 2022, we require the course syllabus from Fall 2022 to ensure your learning is properly recognized and awarded.

If you do not have a copy of these documents, you can contact your previous institution to obtain copies of them. They may be stored by a specific department or the overall faculty. Examples of the documents needed can be found on ONTransfer’s Course Syllabi Search page.

How to Submit

If the transfer credit you were granted was identified as “miscellaneous” or “elective”, but you would like your completed course reassessed for a specific Laurier course equivalency, you must:

  • Confirm your offer to Laurier.
  • Submit official course syllabi from the issuing postsecondary institution for each course you want evaluated using the Transfer Credit Reassessment form. (Please complete one form per course request by the deadline.)
  • Download a copy of each submission.

When to Submit

The transfer credit reassessment process is facilitated three times a year, aligning with your admission term. As such, each admission term has its own deadline to submit course syllabi for faculty review.

Once the faculty experts have completed their assessments, you’ll receive a transfer credit update email outlining the decision(s). It’s possible you’ll receive more than one email as faculty complete their reassessments. You will receive an update to your MyLaurier account before the start of the next term.

While You Wait for Results

As the reassessment will impact which courses you can and should register for, we encourage you to speak with an academic advisor. They can help you identify the best options for registration while you reassessment await re-evaluation decisions rereassessment.

Check out Laurier's Undergraduate Calendar to find course descriptions for all Laurier courses. This may help you select courses with minimal risk of overlapping with previously completed coursework. Please select the calendar for the academic year you started your studies at Laurier.

Tips for a Successful Reassessment

Selecting Courses to Submit

Not sure which course syllabi to submit? Keep in mind that you should only submit courses with content related to your program requirements, and that only college and university courses that meet our final grades requirement for transfer credits will be sent for faculty review.

Courses in Progress

Still in progress with some of your courses but want them to be considered for this reassessment? Submit them! Simply put “In-Progress” in the grade field and we’ll send them to faculty for review. Submitting the syllabi for all the courses you’ve completed, or will be completing, will ensure your transfer credits are as up-to-date and accurate as possible when you start your studies at Laurier.

Save Submissions

Finished submitting your syllabi? Save a copy of your submissions for your reference and records! That way, you’ll have a quick reference point for which courses you’ve already submitted (and when).
