The following are frequently asked questions regarding the admissions process for the Master of Social Work (MSW).
Examples:
Applicants must hold at least a B average (73–76%) in their last 10 half-credit courses.
Applicants must demonstrate paid and/or voluntary experience in human service organizations.
Recommended minimums:
You may apply with unofficial transcripts. If admitted, you must provide a final official transcript.
Try contacting someone from your most recent academic program, even if it has been some time. Remind them of the class, year, assignments, and your final grade. If no academic reference is possible, include a detailed rationale in your application and provide an additional professional reference.
Applicants out of school for 3+ years may submit two professional references instead. Referees should speak to your paid or volunteer human services experience (not friends or family).
Consider completing 3–4 senior-level (200+) undergraduate courses in areas like psychology, sociology, philosophy, women’s studies, communication, or public health. Strong performance can improve your GPA and demonstrate readiness for graduate study.
No. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. Our MSW programs are competitive and space is limited.
Yes. Students may propose placements in their own communities. All placements are vetted by Laurier’s MSW Field Education Office.
