Wilfrid Laurier University will mark Remembrance Day during in-person and online events taking place at the Waterloo and Brantford campuses on Thursday, Nov. 11.
This Remembrance Day marks the 100th anniversary of the poppy, the flower of remembrance adopted by the Great War Veterans’ Association – now a part of the Royal Canadian Legion – in 1921.
The Laurier History Students’ Association will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 11 in the Turret, located on the third floor of the Fred Nichols Campus Centre. Doors will open at 10 a.m. The ceremony will begin at 10:40 a.m. and include opening remarks, a reading of In Flanders Fields in English and French, a live performance of The Last Post by a Laurier music student, two minutes of silence, and the Reveille.
The in-person event will be held in accordance with Public Health guidelines. Guests must follow Laurier’s COVID-19 campus safety protocols, including compliance with the university’s mandatory vaccination policy, wearing a face covering and being approved to attend campus through COVID-19 self-assessment on SAFEHawk. Guests will be required to show their SAFEHawk green self-assessment badge to event organizers to enter the ceremony. Vaccine passports will be checked for guests without access to the SafeHAWK self-assessment.
The Bookstore, the Hub and Starbucks will close during the ceremony.
The City of Brantford’s Remembrance Day ceremony will take place at the Cenotaph, located at Brant Avenue and Dalhousie Street. Guests are asked to follow all COVID-19 safety protocols, including physical distancing and wearing face coverings. The ceremony will be streamed live on the City of Brantford website.
Weather permitting, vintage airplanes will fly over the city at 11:15 a.m. as part of the “Look Up and Remember” initiative organized by the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum.
Martin Luther University College will mark Remembrance Day on Nov. 11 during a contemplative pause on Zoom from noon to 12:20 p.m. The event is open to all members of the university community. Guests can join using meeting ID 869 6629 2682 and passcode 683950.
