Join us at Laurier

Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

Fourth-Year Music
Oakville, ON

Hello future Golden Hawks!

My name is Hannah and I am in my fourth year at Laurier in the Music program. I am a singer in the Music Theory stream, currently working on a minor in French and the Legal Studies option! I am so happy that you are considering Laurier. I can confidently say that coming to Laurier has been one of the best decisions of my life for many reasons.

I was pretty torn on where to go to university at the end of grade 12, and I kind of stumbled upon Laurier. I ended up choosing it because I knew it was a great school academically, but I never considered the impact that student experience and community would have on me. My first week at Laurier was an absolute whirlwind. I participated in our Orientation Week and I am forever glad that I did! I was incredibly shy and un-spirited coming into school, but seeing all of the Orientation Week volunteers around me going crazy, cheering and having the time of their lives, I thought that maybe this was a culture I could be part of. I dove right in and never looked back! I got involved in my first year through a First Year Leadership Program called Upgrade Council. We worked on connecting students with their professors and programs. I met a ton of great friends, made some personal connections with my professors, and learned a lot about myself as well.

My first year was so phenomenal that I decided to apply to become a Campus Ambassador so I could help students like me find their new home. This is my third year now as a Campus Ambassador, and I have continued to get involved in other ways around campus. I love playing intramurals (even though I am terrible at sports) as it gives me a chance to see my friends and blow off some steam every week. I have been on a campaign team for our annual Students’ Union Presidential Election, once again making lots of new friends and exploring a different side the electoral process along the way. I am involved with Laurier Shinerama, a charity that raises money for Cystic Fibrosis research and care, and I love that I can have fun with friends, be a part of Laurier’s Orientation Week and welcome Golden Hawks to their new home, all the while contributing to an amazing cause! I am currently a Supplemental Instruction Assistant for first-year Music Theory, which has been incredibly rewarding, interesting, and fun! I get to run extra help sessions for first-years in a discipline that I love and also give them tips on how to succeed in university.

Laurier has so many amazing opportunities to get involved, meet new people, and explore your interests outside of the classroom. Every single Golden Hawk’s journey is unique, but we are all a part of the same family, and we are all equally cherished and valued. Our energy around campus is enrapturing: vibrant and homey, calming yet invigorating. I promise you that the minute you step foot on our campus you will understand what I am talking about! So I invite you to let Laurier become your new home. Carve out your own path, and take the first step in what will be a thrilling journey. I’m looking forward to seeing you around campus.
