Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

I received my PhD in geochemistry from the McMaster University in 1999 and my BSc in geochemistry from the McMaster in 1994.
Prior to joining Laurier in 2002, I was a postdoctoral fellow in the Chemistry Department at McMaster University (2001-2002) and in the Geology Department the University of Toronto (1998-2000).
My research is driven by the need to establish safe and appropriate limits for metals and nutrients in aquatic systems. There are three main areas of research (1) nutrient removal/recovery (2) metal speciation/toxicity (3) analytical methods for in-situ analysis (monitoring). This research is supported by many government and industrial partners.
I often have positions open for graduate students. Please contact me (ssmith@wlu.ca) for specific opportunities currently available. Projects tend to involve metal speciation analysis, dissolved organic matter quality, nutrient removal and recovery and will include aspects of field work, laboratory research and mathematical modelling.
