Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

I received my PhD in clinical psychology from York University in 2002, my MA in clinical psychology from York University in 1998, and my honours BSc in Psychology from Queen’s University at Kingston, Ontario in 1996.
Prior to joining Laurier, I was a postdoctoral fellow at the Anxiety Disorders Clinic at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto (2002-2004).
I have been at Laurier since 2004. I have been registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario since 2003 (Registration #3955) and maintain a small clinical practice at CBT Associates of Toronto.
The main focus of my research is social anxiety (disorder). My current research focuses on the treatment of social anxiety disorder using different forms of psychotherapy, including traditional cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and mindfulness-based strategies. I am interested in which treatments and strategies are effective, how they work, and for whom they work. I am also interested in factors that are involved in the maintenance of social anxiety over time (e.g., rumination) and the use of self-help. My colleague (Jan Fleming) and I co-wrote a self-help book for social anxiety (http://www.actonsocialanxiety.com/).
I supervise MA and PhD students, as well as honours thesis students, on research related to social anxiety.
Prospective Graduate Students: Please note that although I am a clinical psychologist, Laurier does not have a clinical program, so there is no clinical training. I have typically supervised students in our Social Psychology graduate area.
If you are interested in my area of research (social anxiety), and want to work with me as a graduate student, honours thesis student or undergraduate research assistant, please email me and attach your cv (resume) and unofficial transcript.
