Welcome to Laurier’s Faculty of Science. We are a vibrant and collaborative community committed to curiosity, discovery and meaningful impact. Across our campuses, thousands of undergraduate and graduate students learn alongside exceptional educators and researchers who are shaping the future of science at Wilfrid Laurier University.
As the Dean of Science, it is an honour to serve a community I am proud to be a graduate of and one I have called home for more than a decade. Since joining Laurier in 2012, first as a professor of Health Studies and Biology and later as Vice Dean, my work has been guided by a commitment to transformational learning and to creating educational experiences that encourage students to see the world and themselves through new perspectives.
My academic journey began with a PhD in Biology from the University of Waterloo, where I developed cellular models for studying intracellular fungal parasites, followed by an EdD in Educational Leadership at Western University. My research spans laboratory and pedagogical spaces, including tissue culture, microsporidia (a group of intracellular fungal parasites), and innovative approaches to science education. I am especially committed to creating accessible learning environments informed by how memory works and have developed programming that supports visually impaired students as they explore the sciences.
As a 3M National Teaching Fellow, I view teaching as a deeply human and transformative endeavour that encourages students to question assumptions, spark curiosity and apply knowledge in creative and meaningful ways. Through technology-enhanced learning, escape-box simulations, and interdisciplinary program development, I aim to help students build confidence, manage complexity, and discover their own capacity for innovation.
The Faculty of Science at Laurier is a place where research excellence intentionally intersects with an extraordinary commitment to student experience. Our faculty bring cutting‑edge discoveries into the classroom, and mentor students through hands‑on learning, co‑op, community partnerships and undergraduate research opportunities. Together, we foster an environment where exploration is encouraged and where students develop the curiosity, resilience and imagination needed to address the most pressing challenges of our world.
Science at Laurier is also highly collaborative. As a founding member of the Centre for Leading Research in Education (CLRiE) and through my leadership roles in academic advising, curriculum development and interdisciplinary initiatives, I have seen how shared expertise and collective creativity enhance student success and institutional excellence.
Laurier is a truly special place. I am excited to continue supporting our researchers, educators, staff and students as we expand the impact of science, strengthen inclusive learning environments, and advance discoveries that benefit our communities locally, nationally and globally.
Welcome to the Faculty of Science. I invite you to explore, to question, and to imagine what is possible, because your journey of discovery begins here.
