Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

As a practitioner-scholar, I bring both academic and field experience into the classroom. I received a Master of Arts-Integrated Studies, in Cultural Studies, from Athabasca University, and a Bachelor of Applied Arts, in Journalism, from what is now known as Toronto Metropolitan University. Before starting to teach full-time, I worked as an editor and writer, in both staff and freelance capacities, for a range of Canadian media, including Bankrate Canada, Canadian Geographic, MoneySense, the National Post, Quill & Quire, Saturday Night and This Magazine.
I recently finished writing an introductory-level textbook for Oxford University Press about news writing and reporting, which was published in early 2018. As part of my Wilfrid Laurier University Teaching Fellowship, I am exploring how the use of storytelling and elements of game design can increase engagement and help students better understand the connections between theory and practice. My other research interests include literary journalism and creative nonfiction.
In 2021-2022, I'm teaching:
In April 2020, my colleague Tarah Brookfield and I created One Market, a podcast to help keep the Laurier Brantford community feel connected as we worked and studied remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic. For more than a year, we checked in with staff, faculty and students about how they were adjusting and chatted about their projects, hobbies and how they kept busy in their off-hours.
It was an experiment-in-progress, using the equipment we happened to have at home when campus closed and digital tools we had never used before. I’m always telling my students how important it is to be nimble and creative in the fields of journalism and digital communication, so this was me taking my own advice.
Between April 2020 and May 2021, the podcast was available to download wherever you found your podcasts–Apple, Google, Stitcher, etc. Now that the podcast has ended, we’re making the episodes and transcripts available here.
