Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

My background is in anthropology and history. I am interested broadly in the history of health and disease, from infectious diseases to mental illness, and what the treatment and perception of these ailments can reveal about human society in the past. My current research projects are focused around the long-term family impact of soldier deaths from flu in 1918, and soldier deaths by suicide during the Great War. In 2015, I completed my PhD in the Department of Anthropology at McMaster University, where I studied the 1918 influenza pandemic among soldiers in Canada. From 2016-2018, I was a post-doctoral research fellow, studying the long term consequences of war trauma, at the Laurier Centre for Military, Strategic and Disarmament Studies, in the Department of History at Laurier.
I am willing to work with students interested in applying for funding to spend the summer studying health and disease among soldiers of the Canadian Expeditionary Force.
