Laurier celebrates graduating students, 20th anniversary of Brantford campus during fall convocation ceremony

Brantford – Wilfrid Laurier University will celebrate the accomplishments of 136 graduating students and the 20th anniversary of its Brantford campus during fall convocation, taking place at the Sanderson Centre for the Performing Arts on Oct. 29 at 2:30 p.m.

As of Oct. 22, 103 undergraduate students, 27 graduate students and six students in diploma programs were qualified to graduate from Brantford campus programs.

The board of the Grand Valley Educational Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing post-secondary education to Brantford and the County of Brant, will be awarded the Order of Wilfrid Laurier University during the ceremony. The society was instrumental in the creation of Laurier’s Brantford campus and securing $2 million in donations to renovate a former city library into the first Brantford campus building, the Carnegie Building. Laurier’s Brantford campus is celebrating its 20th anniversary this academic year.

The Order of Wilfrid Laurier University, which honours recipients who possess a record of exemplary and distinguished service to the university, will be awarded to the Grand Valley Educational Society board: Colleen Miller (president), Amy Kendall (vice-president), Cindy Swanson (secretary-treasurer), Vern Gale, Beth Gurney, Ian Harper, Vincent Shiu and Brook Snider.

Also during the Oct. 29 ceremony, Josephine McMurray, associate professor in the Business Technology Management program at the Lazaridis School of Business and Economics and director of the case@BTM competition, will receive the Donald F. Morgenson Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence. The award, Laurier’s most prestigious teaching award, is granted to faculty members who have enriched the educational experience of students through notable approaches to teaching and learning.

Convocation ceremonies will also be held on Laurier’s Waterloo campus Oct. 25 and 26, when honorary degrees will be presented to two accomplished Canadians: Judith Da Silva, an advocate for Indigenous rights and ecological justice, and Ira Gluskin, a business leader and philanthropist.

In Waterloo and Brantford combined, Laurier expects to confer 1,052 undergraduate degrees, 432 graduate degrees and 90 diplomas as part of fall convocation.
