Laurier expert alert: International Women’s Day

Waterloo – International Women’s Day is Friday, March 8. Wilfrid Laurier University experts are available to speak about women’s achievements, feminist activism, gender equality and related issues.

Women and work

Josephine McMurray, associate professor in the Business Technology Management and Health Studies programs at Laurier’s Brantford campus, is an expert on women entrepreneurs and regional innovation systems, particularly in health-related fields. Contact: jmcmurray@wlu.ca or 519.242.7477 (mobile).

Ivona Hideg, assistant professor of organizational behaviour and human resource management at Laurier’s Lazaridis School of Business and Economics, is an expert on gender equality and diversity in the workplace and how prejudiced attitudes may undermine equality. Helen Ramirez, instructor in Laurier’s Women and Gender Studies program, researches the status of women in Canada and why women continue to experience marginality in paid and unpaid work. Contact: hramirez@wlu.ca.

Women’s history

Tarah Brookfield, associate professor in the departments of History and Youth and Children’s Studies at Laurier’s Brantford campus, is an expert on the history of women’s suffrage in Ontario, as well as the history of Canadian women’s political activism and child welfare work, particularly during the First World War, Second World War and Cold War. Maria DiCenzo, professor in Laurier’s Department of English and Film Studies, is a feminist media historian. She is available to comment on the historical dimensions to current women's rights issues. DiCenzo’s research focuses on early women's movements, both before and after the First World War, with a special focus on the suffrage campaign in Britain. Contact: mdicenzo@wlu.ca.

Women in science

Shohini Ghose, professor of physics, is an expert on quantum communication and director of Laurier’s Centre for Women in Science. An advocate for women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, she has spoken extensively about equity, diversity and inclusion in science. Gendered violence

Ginette Lafrenière, associate professor in Laurier’s Lyle S. Hallman Faculty of Social Work, director of Laurier’s Social Innovation Research Group and director of the Manulife Centre for Community Health Research, is an expert on women and community development, as well as gendered-violence.
