Citizen science project examining Ontario schoolyards to be launched at Toronto school

Brantford – Are schoolyards across Ontario equitably promoting health and access to nature? A new citizen-driven research project aims to find out.

Schoolyards Count!, a partnership between Wilfrid Laurier University and Ophea (Ontario Physical and Health Education Association), is being launched at a news conference Friday, April 12, at Rose Avenue Junior Public School in Toronto.

Speakers will include:

  • Kelly Gallagher-Mackay, an educational policy expert and assistant professor in Laurier’s Law and Society program, principal investigator of the project
  • Chris Markham, executive director of Ophea
  • Alorani Van Hahn, teacher and co-lead of EcoSchools at Rose Avenue Junior Public School
  • Grade 5 student schoolyard auditors

All participants, including students, will be available for photos and interviews.
