Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

Explore the lively cafés of downtown Kitchener and participate in urban community life. Design new initiatives that harness vibrant and socially engaged communities. Create solutions for critical challenges faced in urban settings. You can do all this and more in the Community Engagement Option.

The Community Engagement Option is a unique and innovative partnership between Wilfrid Laurier University and The Working Centre. The Working Centre is a highly respected non-profit, community-based, volunteer-inspired venture in Kitchener. For 30 years, The Working Centre has provided tools and opportunities to build community projects in Kitchener-Waterloo and surrounding areas.

In the capstone course, you will be immersed in a placement at The Working Centre, where you will apply community engagement theories and principles to a project or enterprise. With your colleagues, you'll make a positive contribution to the community.

Warning: Almost every student who has taken the Community Engagement Option has said “this Option has changed my life.” It could change yours too!
